Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have soared recently, with Pakistani forces engaging the Afghan army inside Afghanistan, and Kabul continuing to accuse Islamabad of allowing the Taliban to operate from their territory. Now a mob has attacked Pakistan's embassy in Kabul. Pakistan has had aspirations in Afghanistan since the nation's founding, and the Taliban was originally intended as their puppet regime. Karzai's government, on the other hand, has frequently been controntational, and I expect Pakistan to begin seeking clients among the warring Afghan factions. Musharraf's statement that Karzai's government did not adequately reflect Afghanistan's ethnic composition may represent some sort of nod to the Pashtuns.

Here is the most recent RFE-RL Afghanistan report. Just read the litany of fighting and chaos and then compare it with President Bush's declarations of victory.
